Reasonable Suspicion Training

The NTA offers reasonable suspicion training for supervisors of drivers who are subject to controlled substance and alcohol testing regulations under § 382.307. Make sure you have completed the FMSCA required one-time reasonable suspicion training under § 382.603.

The course includes 60 minutes on alcohol misuse, and 60 minutes on controlled substance use, followed by a question-and-answer session with industry experts. We'll teach you to identify physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators that may create reasonable suspicion that a driver is using or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, supporting a referral for testing.

Course Curriculum:

  • A DOT drug and alcohol testing rules and regulations overview
  • The supervisor's role in a drug and alcohol testing program
  • Signs of drug and alcohol use and abuse
  • Interview techniques
  • Documentation processes
  • Health effects of drug and alcohol use, short and long term
  • An in-depth look at specific DOT-tested drugs.
